About Us
Matt is an experienced mountain leader and outdoor professional, known for a calm, methodical approach in complex and high-pressure environments.
His time in the outdoors began early through Scouts, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and the Army Cadets, and it never really stopped. Over the years that followed, the mountains became both workplace and home - through summer and winter mountaineering, climbing, skiing, mountain biking, and long days navigating mountains in all conditions.
Matt is a qualified Summer Mountain Leader, member of mountain training and an experienced navigation tutor. He specialises in mountain safety, decision-making, and moving people confidently through complex terrain when conditions are far from ideal. Alongside this, he holds advanced medical qualifications, bringing a steady, clinical approach to casualty care in remote environments.
After more than 20 years as a director of an outdoor clothing and equipment company, Matt founded Ace Mountain Adventures to focus on what matters most to him: passing on practical skills that help people stay safe, make good decisions, and enjoy the mountains with confidence.
The name comes from Ace - Matt’s dog and long-time adventure companion. From search training and long mountain days to climbing crags, paddling rivers, skiing, riding trails, or simply waiting patiently at the bottom of a route, Ace has been there for countless journeys in the mountains. Ace Mountain Adventures reflects that shared history of steady partnership, time spent outdoors, and learning through experience.
Alongside his professional work, Matt has spent over two decades as an active member of Mountain Rescue, including previous time with Kirkby Stephen MRT and current membership with Swaledale MRT. He has also supported and delivered safety planning for major endurance and mountain events across the UK.
Whether teaching navigation, running bushcraft sessions, supporting events, or leading people on their own adventures, Matt’s focus remains the same:
good judgement, clear communication, solid teamwork — and getting everyone home safely.
